He gained his doktorandus degree in 1991 with a study of a Minangkabau narrative song, Dendang Pauah (the Song of Pauah) on the outskirts of Padang, which was published in 1993. He became an assistant lecturer at his Alma Mater till the end of 1993. He was appointed as a lecturer in Indonesian language at the Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania (Talen en Culturen van Zuidoost-Azi en Oceani/TCZOAO), Universiteit Leiden in September 1998. Before that, he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Arts of Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, having moved from Universitas Andalas to Universitas Indonesia in 1994. He pursues his study in Leiden University. He gained his MA degree from the Faculty of Letters Leiden University in 2002 with a study about the Poem of Sunur (Syair Sunur) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hendrik M.J. Maier (the thesis was published in 2004). His PhD research in the School of Asian, African and Amerindian Studies (CNWS), Leiden University is supervised by Prof. Dr. Bernard Arps (see:http://www.cnws.leidenuniv.nl).

Suryadi’s research interests are in oral traditions and literacy, national and regional literary life in Indonesia, and ethnic cultural phenomena and media in Indonesia. His field research focuses on Sumatra. He has received grants from several national and international foundations to carry out research on to oral traditions and local culture in West Sumatra, namely from the Toyota Foundation (1992/93), the Ford Foundation (1994), and ATL (the Oral Tradition Association) (1995). He spent eight months (from February to August 1998) in Manila, the Philippines, for a course in Tagalog language at the University of the Philippines, Quezon City, under the sponsorship of the Toyota Foundation and the Japan Foundation Asia Centre, Tokyo. Suryadi joined the VA|AVMI programme of CNWS Leiden University from 1 April 1999 until 1 December 2001 as a parttime research fellow. The result was published as “The ‘Talking Machines’ Comes to The Dutch East Indies’, with partly funding by Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Ondezoek (NWO) (see Suryadis list of publications). He is also theprincipal applicant of the project entitled “Locating, documenting and digitising: preserving the endangered manucripts of the legacy of the Sultanate of Buton, South-Eastern Sulawesi Province, Indonesia” awarded by the Endangered Archives Programme, the British Library (2008-2010)
